As Amazon continues to grow in San Joaquin County you may be surprised to learn that they have become our largest private employer. Here’s how it happened. The first location for Amazon in San Joaquin County occurred in 2013 at Prologis Park Tracy with the construction of 1,017,353 sq. ft. building. The building was expanded before completed when Amazon added another 200,000 sq. ft. to house AmazonFresh. Current employment in this initial facility has grown to around 3,500 with a ramp up to more than 7,000 during their peak season.
In 2015, Amazon acquired a 1,001,378 sq. ft. Mountain House spec building located in Prologis International Park of Commerce with job estimates of 750 employees. The second facility houses larger bulk products and has now has around 1,500 associates currently.
In January 2016 Air Transport International (ATI) leased the use of the air cargo ramp and office space within the terminal building at Stockton Metro Airport to service Amazon distributions in Northern California employing 25 air cargo handlers. This air cargo hub is part of a national expansion of eight national airport locations over the past 18 months. Amazon Prime Air is now operating with three daily 767 flights, 365 days per year. Employment has grown to 250 jobs.
In August 2017, Amazon broke ground and announced the construction of a 600,000 sq. ft. facility in Stockton near the Stockton Metro Airport with plans for 1,000 employees. A week later Amazon announced a location in Manteca of a 91,134-square-foot distribution/delivery center in Manteca’s Pacific Business Park. Amazon plans to hire more than 100 full-time and part-time employees.
These real estate investments followed by scaling up of an amazing 6,350 associates in a short four years has made Amazon San Joaquin County’s largest private employer
