Stockton is Back! Named All-America City by National Civic League
June 17, 2015
Congratulations to Stockton for being recognized as an All-America City by the National Civic League (NCL) on Sunday, June 14, in Denver. The highly coveted award, the #1 US Civic Award, is bestowed on 10 cities each year for outstanding civic accomplishments.
City Councilman Michael Tubbs, at the event in Denver, was quoted as saying how proud he was of the city, adding that “We are not perfect now, but there’s a good foundation.”
Cities are asked to present outstanding projects that display civic engagement, collaboration, inclusiveness, innovation and impact. Stockton showcased their collaborative efforts between Fathers & Families of San Joaquin, With Our Words, and the county Probation Department. The presentation on Sunday, created by With Our Words member Tama Brisbane, gave 38 Stockton citizens just 10 minutes to speak on stage.
“Winning the All-America City Award means Stockton is overcoming the challenge of struggle and walking down a journey toward healing and community empowerment. We are showing the country that only with the love and unity amongst our partners can we once again control our city's destiny where all children and families can thrive,” Alejandra Gutierrez said, representing Stockton-based Fathers & Families.
Having received this award twice before, most recently in 2004 and before that in 1999, Stockton is no stranger to civic pride and success; all the more reason to celebrate this amazing turnaround. Stockton’s success reminds the country that the city and people of Stockton are coming back strong after a string of setbacks during the recession. The recognition signals the rest of the country that Stockton is on its way towards a bright future.
